How does a hot water heat pump work?

The Ecodan hot water heat pump uses three key components to provide super energy efficiency for the whole home; a hot water cylinder, an outdoor unit, and smart energy controls.

The Ecodan outdoor unit is the powerhouse of this highly efficient system. Much like a standard heat pump, it absorbs warmth from the air outdoors and transfers this to your home in the form of energy that can power your underfloor heating, radiators, and hot water cylinder.

The hot water cylinder is an all-in-one system that provides continuous hot water for your home, and is designed to work with the Ecodan outdoor unit. However, you can connect an existing hot water cylinder to the Ecodan outdoor unit with an Ecodan Hyrdobox module.

Finally, the Smart Energy Control is a small control system that allows you to monitor and maximise your energy use. It is intuitive, easy to use and allows you to control the temperature in individual rooms for personalised heating and comfort.

Overall, this three-part system offers a significantly higher coefficient of performance (COP). This is a measure of how much heat it creates compared with how much energy it takes. For every 1kW of energy consumption (which it uses to absorb exterior warmth), it provides the home with an average of 3.2kW of heat output. To put that in perspective, typical gas and electric heating systems only provide 0.82kW of heat output, making them far less efficient (and expensive).
